Dance Movement Therapy Part 2

And when you embrace this wisdom by moving freely and wihtout holding back, the "real" healing begins.

One of the most beautiful things about Dance Movement Therapy is that it's truly for everyone.

You don't need to be young, flexible, or coordinated. You don't need any dance experience whatsoever.

You can attend a DMT session or class whether you're five years old or ninety-five...

You can attend whether you can run and jump or use a wheelchair, DMT is for EVERYONE.

For children, DMT is like play with a purpose. Kids naturally express themselves through movement...

Children tend to jump when excited or stomp their feet on the ground when angry.

DMT gives children a safe space to explore their feelings and learn healthy ways to express them.

Most children struggle to put their emotions into words, and dance becomes their voice.

Teens often feel caught between childhood and adulthood, dealing with intense emotions and questions about who they are.

DMT offers them a space to explore their identity, release pent-up feelings, and build confidence in their own bodies.

In a world that constantly tells young people how they should look and act, DMT says, "Move however you want to".

For adults, the benefits of DMT are just as powerful...

Maybe you're dealing with work stress, relationship challenges, or grief from a loss.

Maybe you feel disconnected from your body or stuck in old patterns.

Dance movement therapy helps you process these experiences in a whole new way.

It gives you permission to stop thinking for a while and just feel.

And for elderly individuals, Dance Movement Therapy is a joyful way to stay active and engaged.

It supports balance and coordination, which are so important as we age.

It also helps older adults connect with memories, maintain social connections, and continue expressing themselves creatively.

If you've never been to a Dance Movement Therapy session before, you might be wondering what to expect.

Will you be forced to dance in front of others? Will you need to follow complicated choreography? The answer is no, nothing like that.

Most sessions begin with a gentle warm-up. This isn't like a gym warm-up where you're trying to break a sweat.

Instead, it's about bringing your attention into your body...

You might do some simple stretching, roll your shoulders, take some deep breaths, or gently shake out your hands and feet.

The facilitator is helping you transition from the busy-ness of your day into a calmer, more present state.

Then comes the heart of the session: free exploration. The facilitator might offer a gentle invitation, like...

"Let's explore what it feels like to move with strength," or "How does your body want to move right now?"

But they're not telling you exactly what to do. You have complete freedom to move in whatever way feels right.

Maybe you'll move slowly and gently. Maybe you'll move quickly and powerfully. Maybe you'll barely move at all, choosing to stand still and just breathe.
